How to Raise a Disney-Free Princess

No, this blog post does not have directions for doing so... sorry if the title got you excited for such. I'm just trying to figure it out, myself. If I really want to do this, I think I'm going to have to really commit, and commit early on.

It isn't that I am Anti-Disney.

Have you seen my son's extensive collection of PIXAR Cars toys and memorabilia? MY GOODNESS!!!

I just am not a huge fan of tv characters on everything with girl stuff. Does that make me sexist on some level? I don't mind boy stuff being all Cars and Franklin the Turtle and Ice Age and Madagascar and whatever else... well, he mostly just has Cars stuff and they all match with their cool red and navy blue.. I think they look better than Hot Wheels stuff, to be honest.

I can't stand all that Disney Princess crap that they have plastered on every girl item, though!!

Growing up, I liked Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Cinderella, Snow White...etc.. etc.. etc.. So, it isn't that I have a problem with the movies or Disney. I just don't see why every toy, piece of furniture, article of clothing, and house hold item needs to have them plastered on it! And why do they have to be friends with each other now? It doesn't make any sense!!! LOL!

And you know what I really don't like? BOOKS made after tv shows and movies. Is there no escape from the early bombardment of commercialism? Its like we must raise our children to BUY, BUY, BUY... So, I guess I equate Disney Princesses with capitalist scum! HARSH words coming from not-a-communist, I know.

I dislike Santa Clause for the same reason! UGH! "Me, me, me"... "I want, I want, I want"... "If I only had this, I would be happy"... as if!!!

I am so backwards, though, because I like getting CARS stuff for Jayden. LOL! And I like to aquire pretty things and happy things... they do, on some level, make me happier... but I definitely don't want to raise kids who think riches = joy, because that is just stupid and untrue and will make them unhappy their whole lives.

So, maybe capitalism and selfishness and commercialism isn't my main reason for not liking the Disney Princess stuff... maybe it really just is that fact that most of the stuff is just tacky, lol!

Yeah, I think it is more or less the fact that I don't really like cartoon characters from movies and whatnot all over everything... I like real books, illustrated by real artists, written by real authors... I like pretty things that look more one-of-a-kind than assembly line, made-in-china crap.

But, for some reason, Cars is immune? Boys don't need pretty, special things?

Actually, when we move to our own place, I plan on having a more original room for my son with hand-built furniture and hand-painted art. So, I guess I... well.. I dunno... I'm just being weird...

I just don't want everything in my daughter's future room to have "Disney" written on it. I would like her to learn about pretty, magical, enchanted princesses outside of Disney's commercialized versions. I remember growing up being excited about real fairy tales and the pretty princesses and maidens from them... as well as enjoying the occasional Disney movie.

I'm so with you on this one!

I'm doing a princess room for my girls and I'm trying to avoid the Disney stuff! I like the classic pink and frilly princess - unicorns etc instead of the commercialized stuff!

Room decors and bday parties should not be character centered IMHO
